Platform: Windows (All Versions)

Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 02 Dec 2014

Despite the many cloud services and specialized applications, there is still room for improvement when it comes to transferring data between a computer and a mobile device. Filedrop offers a simple and straightforward method of copying files between these platforms, without the need to connect them with a cable and without relying on a cloud service. You only need to have them connected to the same wireless network.

The application is available for Windows, Mac OS X and for Android and iOS devices. Except for the iOS version, the application is offered free of charge on all platforms. It can be installed in a matter of seconds, without preparing any prerequisite tools.

Filedrop has to be installed both on your computer and your mobile device. Of course, the application can be used with more than two platforms at a time. Filedrop's desktop version provides a compact user interface, with a sleek look and neat animations. Once you install it and run it on a mobile device, the desktop interface will immediately react, by displaying a graphical representation of the device.

Data can be sent to a mobile device by simply dragging and dropping files over its representation on the application's interface. Transfers can be made in the other direction as well. The receiver will be prompted to accept or decline. If he accepts, the files will be transferred immediately, without any further user input and stored in a default folder. You can view a history of previous transfers on the desktop interface, where you can also click a button to open the folder or choose another storage location.

Pros

You can transfer files between a computer and a mobile device, without cables or cloud servers. The application can immediately recognize other platforms on the same wireless network.

Cons

The application's iOS version is the only one you have to pay for. With its highly efficient functionality, Filedrop leaves little room for improvements when it comes to transferring data between mobile platforms and computers.
